Jubair Ahmed (Essex, UK)
Who I am
Jubair Ahmed is in his early 40s and owns a takeaway. He lives in Chadwell Heath in Essex. Jubair is one of the interviewees from the area that includes the Borough of Newham in London and spreads eastwards into Essex. Jubair was chosen because he arrived in the UK as a teenager in the late 1980s and therefore represents the wave of family migration during that period. However, his father was settled long before this and came to England as a merchant seaman. This adds an important historical dimension to Jubair's story.
Jubair was educated to college level and graduated from Habiganj Brindaban Government College in Bangladesh. He came to London in 1987 and, after studying at Newham College, worked in a restaurant and later opened an Indian takeaway. The Bangladeshi restaurant business is an important part of the settlement process of Bangladeshis in and across the UK.
