Farzana Banu Shirin (Syedpur, Bangladesh)

My mother's whole family is in Pakistan. My maternal grandfather was a contractor; they used to have a huge house and quite a few shops in Syedpur; but then they sold everything and left for Pakistan. They left suddenly – on the day before Indira Gandhi's assassination [she died on 31 October 1984].

We're in touch by mobile phone; they send us pictures of their weddings. I would never want to go to India or Pakistan to settle because I wouldn't want to live so far away from my family. My mother cries at every Eid because her family is so far away. It costs a lot of money to go there so we haven't yet been on a visit to Pakistan.
