Settling in

Our family has gone through some rough times. 1971 [the breaking up of India and the creation of Bangladesh] challenged our allegiances. I don't like exploring that period and I might get you in trouble by talking about those events. We're Urdu-speakers but we're from Bengal, not the others [people from Bihar].

Hindus started riots in 1932 in Old Dhaka. Bankim Chandra, the son of Asutosh Mukherjee, the writer, used to come here and he used to incite the Hindus. The British used to give more privileges to the Hindus and that's why clashes started.
